The main event at Montezuma United Methodist Church is each Sunday morning as we gather together as a church community for Worship & Praise at 10 a.m. "Blended" would be the best way to describe our worship style. In other words, we value the traditional aspects of United Methodist worship, but also give grace to new traditions and music that remind us of our work in the world together. The following are a few things a visitor to our Sunday services might expect:

Informal Dress
We do not have a formal dress code! Our congregation typically arrives to worship in business casual attire, or jeans and and a nice shirt. Dressing light in the summer is okay too! Most importantly, come as you are - we're just glad to have you!

Parking, Accessibility and Restrooms

Our main parking areas are on the north and east sides of the church property, which sits on the southeast corner of the town square. We have dedicated and marked accessible spots near the main entrance for anyone that needs it.

Our main entrance is accessible by ramp, and once inside the church we have a chair lift to the Main Sanctuary level, as well as an elevator that moves from the main sanctuary level to the lower level and Fellowship Hall. There is always someone to help anyone that needs extra assistance getting to either level of the church.

A single accessible and non-gendered restroom is available at the back of the Main Sanctuary level towards the office. A set of gendered restrooms are available on the lower level in Fellowship Hall.

Order of Worship

We use a standard order of worship each week that is centered around the observance of liturgical seasons and follows the lectionary. Our service opens with a corporate call to worship and centering prayer, followed by other more traditional components of worship, including singing of the Gloria Patri and the Doxology. There is also a time of sharing joys and concerns for our prayer time that always concludes with the Lord's Prayer. And of course, there's a sermon that challenges us and helps us grow in our faith. We provide a service bulletin for the order of worship, plus many components are also projected on the screens that flank each side of the our sanctuary.

Music

The United Methodist Hymnal and The Faith We Sing hymnal supplement are our two main resources used for congregational song. On any given Sunday we may sing an 18th century hymn tune, a contemporary praise song, and a toe-tapping gospel number. They say variety is the spice of life and so we try to honor both old and new traditions in song. Our staff music coordinator leads music from the piano and uses other instruments to add to the singing. Our Chancel Choir also participates in worship at various times of the year.

Children Welcome

Our congregation especially welcomes families with children, who are encouraged to be present in our worship service each Sunday. Seeing our little ones grow in their faith each week during our special children's sermon time is just one of the highlights of our worshipping together. There is a dedicated area towards the back of the sanctuary just in case one of your kiddos gets a little fussy, and activity bags and children's books to keep them occupied. A changing station is available in the lower level women's restrooms near Fellowship Hall. Children's Sunday School is held each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. during the academic school year.

Holy Communion

We celebrate Holy Communion at Montezuma UMC on the first Sunday of each month, and other services as planned. In the United Methodist Church, the communion table is open to all who wish to receive the goodness of the Lord and who seek the love of God in their lives. Membership is not required. Our congregation comes forward to receive communion after the traditional communion liturgy is shared and proclaimed. We first receive the bread of life (gluten-free is available), and then receive the cup of salvation (juice). Communion is also brought to our homebound folks and nursing home residents during the week we share in the Lord's Table.

Hospitality & Fellowship

Immediately following our Sunday service, all are invited to share in a time for coffee, goodies and conversation in our Fellowship Hall on the lower level. Our congregants take turns volunteering as hosts for each Sunday in preparing a spread of tasty delights to share. On months where there is a fifth Sunday, we usually gather for a meal or potluck after worship.
